Changing your cambelt, or timing belt, is one of the most important aspects of maintaining your car. If a cambelt breaks, serious damage can occur in the engine. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell if a cambelt needs replacing without dismantling the engine. It’s therefore important to adhere to your manufacturer’s advice when it comes to the recommended time of replacement for your cambelt. This can help you avoid hefty repair bills further down the track.

What is a cambelt?
A cambelt is a mutli-toothed belt that turns the camshaft, in time with the engine so that valves will open and close in synchronisation with each other and the pistons. In some vehicles, a cambelt will be used to drive other engine components such as the water pump or oil pump. Some engines use timing chains or gears instead of a cambelt.
What happens when a cambelt breaks?
If a cambelt breaks, damage can occur to the engine. Pistons can hit the valves, causing them to bend and break. Changing your cambelt at the recommended scheduled time is a much less costly and involved process than repairing this kind of engine damage.
