Car tyres and safety

Car tyres are often overlooked when it comes to vehicle safety; however they have a very important role to play. The tread depth, condition and pressure of your tyres should be regularly checked to ensure your vehicle complies with the law, runs efficiently and is safe.

Tread Depth: The minimum legal limit is 1.6mm across the middle 75% of the tyre at any point. All tyres have wear indicators, which are located in the base of the tyre tread groove. Once your tyre has worn past this indicator, it is no longer legal to drive on the road, and your tyres must be replaced. Once your tyres are worn past 3mm, it’s a good idea to replace them. This amount of wear can affect breaking and cornering performance.

Tyre Pressure: You’ll get better fuel economy, extended tyre life and increased vehicle safety, if your tyres are at the correct pressure. Tyres should be cold when checking for pressure and also set to the manufacturer’s specifications. Incorrect tyre pressure can result in irregular wear patterns, decreased grip, and increased breaking distances.

Tyre Condition: It’s recommended that you regularly check your tyres for damage or unusual wear. Look for cracks, bulges or anything else that doesn’t look right.  This kind of damage can affect your car’s performance, the life of its tyres and ultimately your safety.

“It’s rare to deal with a family run business in the motor trade. It’s good to know that you will be talking to only one of a few people, who know you personally and have remembered your requirements. Very polite and friendly service.”

Legal issues

It’s important to make sure your tyres are legal. If your tyres are worn past the legal limit or are not roadworthy, you risk receiving the maximum penalty fine of £2,500 and 3 penalty points on your driving licence, per tyre.

Wheel balancing

If your car tyres and wheels are not correctly balanced, you could experience an unpleasant vibration or your steering may wobble at certain speeds. The result of incorrect wheel balancing is the premature wearing of suspension and steering components, as well as rotating parts and tyres. We offer complete electronic wheel balancing on all new tyres fitted.
